Another one of William the Conqueror's strategically placed castles, Arundel Castle dates back to 1068. Positioned for defense, it guarded the mouth of the River Arun, protecting the area from foreign invasion. The Castle construction began as a motte (artificial mound ) and a gatehouse in the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel. Subsequently the Castle became the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for over 850 years. The present building is the result of massive restoration carried out by the 15th Duke of Norfolk.
Within the Castle is fine furniture dating from the 16th century, tapestries, clocks, and memorable paintings by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Mytens, Reynolds and others.. Private guided tours are available for small groups. You will see ornate and richly restored castle rooms, the castle keep, the 14th century Fitzalan Chapel, the gardens and grounds, and more.
After visiting the castle wander around the market town itself, there is a rich variety of thriving, independent retailers, all giving a highly individual welcome. The town has become famous not only for its antique shops but also for its wide range of other contemporary shops and galleries.
This would be a lovely way to spend an hour or two en-route to or from Gatwick...!
